There are at least three Greek-Australians that have made it into The Daily Telegraph’s Power 100 rankings for 2023, with one finishing inside the top ten.
The highest placed is Peter V’Landys, with the Racing NSW chief executive and chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) landing in fourth spot.
V’landys was born on the island of Kythera before migrating with his mother and two brothers to Australia in 1965, joining his father in Wollongong (south of Sydney).
He became involved in horse racing administration in 1988, slowly building his way up until being appointed to chief executive and board member of Racing NSW in 2004.
One of his biggest achievements in horse racing has been the introduction of the ‘Everest’ race, the world’s richest race on turf, which has attracted global interest.
V’landys has notably become an even bigger personality following his appointment as ARLC chairman in 2019.
During his time, he navigated the COVID-19 hurdles almost perfectly, helping resume the 2020 NRL season just a few months after the first lockdown.
This was the first professional league in Australia to resume its competition, and he was subsequently coined by many as the man who ‘saved’ rugby league during the pandemic.
The next Greek-Australian on the list is another Rugby League personality in Nick Politis, the Sydney Roosters chairman and businessman, who was put in 18th place.
Politis migrated from Kythera to Australia in the late 1940s and has been a notable figure for the Sydney Roosters since 1976, where he was responsible for the first sponsor on a professional rugby league team’s jersey.
He has been chairman of the NRL club since 1993 and become an extremely influential figure, sometimes affectionately called ‘The Godfather’ or ‘Uncle Nick’.
Outside of his rugby league exploits, Politis has managed to build a $2 billion fortune through his business dealings, having started from one car dealership and grown his empire into an estimated 250 businesses.
The final Greek-Australian on the list is John Hatzistergos, the Chief Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), who came in at 44th.
Hatzistergos was born in Redfern, Sydney, to two Greek immigrant parents and has had an extensive career in law and politics.
He represented the Labor Party as a member of the NSW Legislative Council between 1999 and 2011, notably serving as Attorney General (2007-2011) for four years to three different Labor premiers.
Following his retirement from politics, he was appointed as a judge of the District Court of NSW in 2014 and then Chief Commissioner of ICAC in August of last year.
